District No. 3 Antiques

Located in one of Wittenberg’s oldest buildings dating back to 1882, District No. 3 Antiques is part museum and part antique store. It is conveniently located next to Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats Company store on Old Highway 29 just east of Wittenberg, WI.

The building was used as Wittenberg’s first schoolhouse. It was later used as the Village Hall at which time a back room was added including a very primitive jail cell. The jail cell is still housed in the building today. The building was destined to be demolished, but instead was moved to its present location in 1992 and was extensively refurbished. District No. 3 Antiques opened its doors in the summer of 2000, operating Monday – Saturday 10:00am – 4:00pm for the past 17 years. The store has hosted many travelers passing through on their way “Up North” or to beautiful Door County.

In addition to regional unique antiques, the store offers handmade gift items including soaps, aprons, dish towels, linens, etc. We carry items from the Nueske family owned Applewood Lane Alpaca farm, located just a mile from the store.

When you stop in, you may have an opportunity to see a demonstration on our 1884 LeGare model antique sock knitting machine, just like the ones used during WWI to make socks for soldiers. A spinning demonstration may also be possible, as is a demonstration on “thrumming”, an old fashioned knitting technique.

Choose from a wide selection of hand knit alpaca items including scarves, hats, mittens, slippers, headbands, etc. We also have a nice selection of yarn and roving on hand from our own Applewood Lane Alpacas in natural colors if you would like to make your own hand knit or crocheted items.

Before heading next door to the Nueske Applewood Smoked Meats company store, be sure to sign our guest book and ring our old school bell! You will find a wide variety of Nueske’s famous smoked meats, cheeses, honey, jams, and many other delectable treats there.
